Indications/Uses
Local treatment of trichomonal & nonspecific vaginitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Trichomonal vaginitis 1 vag supp once daily for 10 days. Administer deeply into the vagina. Nonspecific vaginitis 1 vag supp administered deeply into the vagina once daily for 7 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other imidazole derivatives. Not recommended in combination w/ disulfiram or alcohol. Childn.
Special Precautions
Not to be used for >10 days & no more than 2-3 times/yr. Avoid alcohol consumption during therapy. Possibility of persisting gonococcal infection. Administer after hemodialysis. Discontinue use in cases of ataxia, dizziness or confused mental state. Conduct blood test especially for determination of the number of leukocytes in patients w/ hematologic disorders in history or when administered in high doses &/or for long duration of time. Patients w/ leucopenia. Monitor for signs of adverse effects eg, central or peripheral neuropathy when administered for a long period. May darken urine. May increase chances of latex rupture when using condoms or diaphragms. False +ve in Nelson's test. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients w/ hepatic encephalopathy. Pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth, glossitis w/ xerostomia, stomatitis, taste disturbances (metallic taste in the mouth), anorexia, coated tongue; hot flashes w/ hyperemia, itching, rash which may be accompanied by fever, urticaria, angioedema; peripheral sensory neuropathy, headache, cramps, dizziness, ataxia, drowsiness, aseptic meningitis; psychotic disorders including confused mental state, hallucinations, depressed mood; temporary vision impairment (eg, diplopia, myopia, blurred vision, impaired visual acuity, changes in color perception), optic neuropathy/neuritis; high body temp.
Drug Interactions
Acute transient disorders w/ delirium w/ disulfiram. Disulfiram-like reaction w/ alcohol. Potentiated effect & increased hemorrhagic risk caused by decreased hepatic metabolism w/ oral anticoagulant therapy (warfarin type). Increased plasma levels of lithium & busulfan. Risk of elevation of cyclosporin serum levels. Decreased plasma conc w/ phenytoin or phenobarb. Reduced clearance results in increased toxicity of 5-fluorouracil.
