Indications/Uses
Resp, skin & skin structure & intra-abdominal infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones. History of tendon disease/disorder related to quinolone treatment. Congenital or documented acquired QT prolongation, electrolyte disturbance particularly uncorrected hypokalaemia, bradycardia, heart failure w/ reduced left-ventricular ejection fraction, previous history of symptomatic arrhythmias. Drugs prolonging QT interval. Impaired liver function (Child Pugh C) & w/ transaminases increased by >5-fold ULN. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity & allergic reactions. Discontinue treatment if signs of cardiac arrhythmia occurs. Not recommended for treatment of MRSA infections. Ongoing proarrhythmic conditions (especially women & elderly) eg, acute MI or QT prolongation may lead to increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias (including torsade de pointes) & cardiac arrest. Bullous skin reaction eg, Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. Patients w/ CNS disorders or predispose to seizure or lower seizure threshold; history of psychiatric disease. Fulminant hepatitis. Consider antibiotic-associated diarrhea including colitis in patients who develop serious diarrhea during or after treatment. Tendon inflammation & rupture (especially Achilles tendon) sometimes bilateral. Increased risk of tendonitis & rupture in elderly & concurrently w/ corticosteroids. Symptoms of myasthenia can be exacerbated. History of actual G6PD, galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption. Pelvic inflammatory disease eg, associated w/ tubo-ovarian or pelvic abscess. Vision disorders. Concomitant use of medications that can reduced K levels. Perform liver function tests/investigation where indications of liver dysfunction occur. Avoid exposure to either UV irradiation or extensive &/or strong light during treatment. May interfere w/ Mycobacterium spp. culture test. Renal impairment. Effects on ability to drive & use machines. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, headache & dizziness.
Drug Interactions
Quinidine & procainamide or amiodarone & sotalol. Antihistamines, astemizole & terfenadine, cisapride, erythromycin, pentamidine, phenothiazines, or TCAs.
