Methylcobalamin
Indications/Uses
Peripheral neuropathies & megaloblastic anemia caused by vit B12 deficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1,500-6,000 mcg daily. Pregnancy 2.6 mcg daily. Lactation Not >2.8 mcg daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meal.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of liver disease & any allergy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain; hot sensation, diaphoresis; pain/induration (IM); rarely, hypersensitivity reaction eg, rash, dyspnoea; anorexia; headache.
Drug Interactions
Delayed or interrupted reticulocyte response to supplemental vit B12 in some patients w/ chloramphenicol. Reduced absorption w/ ASA, antibiotics, colchicine, cholestyramine, H2-blockers, metformin, neomycin, nitrous oxide, OCs, phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, PPI, zidovudine.
