Propranolol HCl

Management of HTN, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary insufficiency, migraine prophylaxis & benign essential tumor.

HTN Initially 2 tab of 40 mg, then increased if necessary to 80 mg bid. Max: 320 mg/day. Angina pectoris Initially 10-20 mg tid-qid. Max: 400 mg/day. Arrhythmias 10-30 mg tid-qid. Migraine Initially 40 mg bid, increased gradually to 80-160 mg/day. Hypertrophic subaortic stenosis 20-40 mg tid-qid.

Bronchospasm including bronchial asthma; allergic rhinitis during pollen season; sinus bradycardia & >1st degree block; cardiogenic shock, right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary HTN; CHF unless failure is secondary to tachyarrhythmia treatable w/ propranolol.

Should not be given to patients w/ bronchospasm or asthma or to those w/ history of obstructive airway disease. Contains tartrazine which may cause allergic-type reactions (including bronchial asthma) in certain susceptible persons. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly ≥65 yr.

Bradycardia, CHF, intensification of AV block, hypotension, paresthesia of hands, thrombocytopenic purpura, arterial insufficiency, usually of the Raynaud type; light-headedness, mental depression, manifested by insomnia, lassitude, weakness, fatigue, catatonia; visual disturbances, hallucinations, vivid dreams, acute reversible syndrome characterized by disorientation for time & place, short-term memory loss, emotional liability, slightly clouded sensorium, & decreased performance on neuropsychometrics; nausea, vomiting epigastric distress, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, constipation, mesenteric, arterial thrombosis, ischemic colitis; hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions, pharyngitis & agranulocytosis, erythematous rash, fever combined w/ aching & sore throat, laryngospasm, resp distress; bronchospasm; agranulocytosis, nonthrombocytopenic purpura, thrombocytopenic purpura; SLE; SJS, TEN, dry eyes, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, urticaria, alopecia, SLE-like reactions, & psoriasiform rashes; male impotence, Peyronie's disease.

Pharmacodynamic interactions w/ drugs whose actions enhance or antagonize the various effects of β-blockers at receptors, including antihypertensive effect, cardiodepressant effect, effect on carbohydrate metabolism, or effect on bronchial β₂ receptors.

Beta-Blockers
