Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
UTIs, osteomyelitis, gonorrhea & other STDs, enteric fever, resp tract, skin & soft tissue, bacterial GI & bone & joint infections. Prophylaxis in granulocytopenic patients. Surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: 250-500 mg bid. Acute exacerbation of cystic fibrosis associated w/ Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection Adolescent & childn ≥5 yr 20 mg/kg up to max: 750 mg bid. Acute uncomplicated cystitis Women 100 mg bid. Gonorrhea Single dose of 250-500 mg. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis Single dose of 500 mg. Surgical infection prophylaxis Single dose of 750 mg given 60-90 min prior to procedure.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Ensure adequate fluid intake. Patients w/ epilepsy. Hepatic or renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in adolescents or childn.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis, photosensitivity, increased blood urea & creatinine, transient disturbances in liver enzymes & bilirubin, arthralgia, myalgia, blood disorders.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption w/ Mg-Al antacids. Elevated serum conc of theophylline. Metabolism may be induced w/ rifampicin. May be antagonistic in combination w/ chloramphenicol.
