Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 5 mg once daily, increased in 5-mg increments to 10 mg daily (5 mg bid), 15 mg daily (5 mg & 10 mg as separate doses) & target dose of 20 mg daily (10 mg bid). Min recommended interval between dose increases: 1 wk. Severe renal impairment Target dose: 5 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ seizure disorder. Urinary elimination may be decreased resulting in increased plasma levels in conditions raising urine pH. Severe hepatic impairment. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Fatigue, pain, dizziness, headache, HTN & joint pain may occur. Serious side effects: Mental/mood changes (eg, depression, agitation, anxiety), swelling of hands or feet, trouble breathing.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ other NMDA antagonists eg, amantadine, ketamine & dextromethorphan. Co-administration of drugs using the same renal cationic system including hydrochlorothiazide, triamterene, metformin, cimetidine, ranitidine, quinidine & nicotine could potentially result in altered plasma levels of both agents. Reduced clearance w/ drugs that make urine alkaline.
