Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of folate deficiency state. Women of childbearing potential & pregnant women to protect against neural tube defects in their offspring. Folate-deficient megaloblastic anaemia, chronic haemolytic states eg, thalassaemia major or sickle-cell anaemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Folate-deficient megaloblastic anaemia 5 mg daily for 4 mth. Up to 15 mg daily may be necessary in malabsorption states. Chronic haemolytic states eg, thalassaemia major or sickle-cell anaemia 5 mg every 1-7 days. Women of childbearing potential at high risk of having pregnancy affected by neural tube defect 4 or 5 mg daily starting before pregnancy & continued through the 1st trimester. Prophylaxis of folate deficiency in childn on dialysis Childn >12 yr 5-10 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Should never be given alone or w/ inadequate amounts of vit B12 for the treatment of undiagnosed megaloblastic anaemia.
Drug Interactions
Folate deficiency states w/ antiepileptics, OCs, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, & folic acid antagonists eg, MTX, pyrimethamine, triamterene, trimethoprim, & sulfonamides. Decreased serum conc of phenytoin & barbiturate antiepileptics.
