Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections of the resp tract, middle ear, sinuses, eyes, kidneys & urinary tract, genital organ, abdomen, skin & soft tissues, bones & joints; further septicemia, infections in patients w/ reduced host defense & for selective gout decontamination. Treatment of animal bites, biliary tract infections, brucellosis, cat-scratch disease, chancroid, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, Legionnaires' disease, meningitis, otitis externa, peritonitis, Q fever, spotted fevers, typhoid & paratyphoid fever, typhus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250-750 mg bid depending on the severity of the infection. Treatment of gonorrhea & prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis Single dose of 500 mg. Childn & adolescent 5-15 mg/kg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone chemotherapeutics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy & previous CNS disorder. Childn, adolescents.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; rarely pseudomembranous colitis; headache, dizziness & restlessness; tremor, drowsiness, insomnia, bad dreams & visual disturbances; more rarely hallucinations, psychotic reactions, depression & convulsions; peripheral neuropathy. Rash, pruritus, hypersensitivity-type reactions, anaphylaxis. Reversible arthralgia.
Drug Interactions
Antacids, Fe prep, theophylline & warfarin. Should not be administered by mouth w/in 4 hr of prep containing Mg, Al or Fe salts.
