Budesonide
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma. Acute viral URTI (viral laryngotracheobronchitis or laryngitis subglottica) in childn & infants.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Childn <12 yr Severe asthma 2 mg (highest dose) daily.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ active or quiescent pulmonary TB & w/ fungal or viral infections in the airways. Non-steroid & steroid dependent patients. Allergic or arthritic symptoms eg, rhinitis, eczema, & muscle & joint pain during transfer from oral therapy. Discontinue immediately if paradoxical bronchospasm occurs. Risk of impaired adrenal function. Consider additional systemic corticosteroid treatment during period of stress or elective surgery. Systemic effects including Cushing's syndrome, Cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation in childn & adolescents, decrease in bone mineral density, cataract, glaucoma. Not intended for rapid relief of acute episodes of asthma. Oral candidiasis may occur during therapy. Development of pneumonia in patients w/ COPD. Visual disturbances. Avoid combination w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole, HIV PIs & cobicistat-containing products. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn (monitor height regularly during prolonged treatment).
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of systemic side effects w/ CYP3A inhibitors eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole, HIV PIs & cobicistat-containing products. Raised plasma conc & enhanced effects w/ oestrogens & contraceptive steroids. False results (low values) w/ ACTH simulation tests for diagnosing pituitary insufficiency.
