Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of chronic cerebro-organically conditioned disturbances of functional capacity in the course of a therapeutic overall programme in case of dementia syndrome manifestation (eg, impaired memory, lack of concentration, thought process blockade, premature fatigue & lack of drive & motivation, affective disturbances).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab tds. May be increased to 2 tab tds. Renal impairment: Mild (CrCl 50-79 mL/min) 2/3 usual daily dose in 2 or 3 divided doses, moderate (CrCl 30-49 mL/min) 1/3 usual daily dose in 2 divided doses, severe (CrCl <30 mL/min) 1/6 usual daily dose in a single intake.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ 1 glass of liqd eg, water, together w/ or directly after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to piracetam, other pyrrolidone derivatives. Cerebral haemorrhage (eg, stroke). Huntington's chorea. Existing or history of psychomotor agitation. Severe renal insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ disturbed blood coagulation, major operations (including dental surgeries) or severe haemorrhages (eg, gastric ulcer). History of events affecting brain vessels & associated w/ bleeding. Concomitant use of medicines to prevent blood clotting or platelet aggregation (including low-dose ASA). Patients taking anticonvulsants should keep the treatment w/ anticonvulsants even if they think their condition has improved. Can lead to +ve results in doping controls. Possible impairment of reactivity. May impair ability to drive a car or use machines. Renal insufficiency. Pregnancy. Not to be used during lactation period or alternatively interrupt breast-feeding during treatment. Regularly check CrCl values to adjust dose if needed in elderly patients on prolonged use.
Adverse Reactions
Wt gain; increased psychomotor activity, nervousness, aggressiveness, disturbed sleep, insomnia, depressive mood, anxiety; hyperkinesia; abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
May possibly reinforce effects of coumarin derivatives, CNS stimulants, neuroleptics & thyroid hormones in case of hypothyrosis.
