Tetracycline HCl
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms. Trachoma & inclusion conjunctivitis. Alternative drug for several infections when penicillin is contraindicated. Adjunctive therapy in amoebiasis & severe acne.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 g daily in divided doses. May be given up to 250 mg 8 times daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals w/ a full glass of water in upright position. May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Renal impairment. Pregnancy. Childn ≤8 yr.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi. May depress plasma prothrombin activity. Not to be administered w/ penicillin, antacids. Monitor for dose-related BUN increase. Not recommended in lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, glossitis, dysphagia, enterocolitis, skin rashes, photosensitivity; haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia. Teeth discoloration & enamel hypoplasia in childn.
Drug Interactions
Impaired absorption by antacids. May require downward anticoagulant dosage adjustment on patients on anticoagulant therapy. May interfere w/ bactericidal action of penicillins. May render OCs less effective.
