Differential Diagnosis

The diagnosis of insomnia must only be made once any underlying medical, substance use, and/or behavioral cause has been ruled out such as:

  • Central sleep apnea
  • Cheyne-Stokes breathing pattern
  • Depression
  • High altitude periodic breathing
  • Jet-lag disorder
  • Medication-related insomnia
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Periodic limb movement disorder
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Sleeplessness and circadian rhythm disorder
