Silver sulfadiazine
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of burn infections in 2nd & 3rd degree burned patients. Other skin conditions eg, leg ulcers. Prophylaxis of infection in skin grafting.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply 2-4 mm thick layer once daily, may be repeated for severe burns at least once in 24 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. Discontinue treatment & not to be re-started if symptoms or signs of SJS or TEN are present. Not to be used by patients allergic to peanut or soya. Patients w/ damage to liver parenchyma. Gray skin discoloration under influence of sunlight. Closely monitor for skin reactions. Perform WBC count if signs for leukopenia are observed or if patient is hypersensitive to sulfonamides. Carefully monitor patients w/ or suspected w/ G6PD deficiency. Kidney failure. Hepatic & renal impairment. Not to be to used in late pregnancy. Women who want to conceive. Lactation. Not to be to used in premature infants or infants <2 mth. Premature neonates & infants w/ G6PD deficiency (increased risk of hyperbilirubinemia & kernicterus).
