Fusidic acid.
Description
Each gram contains Fusidic acid 20 mg.
White cream for topical administration. Fusidic acid is an antibacterial which is derived from Fusidium coccineum. It is very active against staphylococci, notably Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis (including methicillin-resistant strains) and Neisseria spp. Norcardia asteroides and many clostridial strains are also highly susceptible.
Action
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: Fusidic acid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by blocking aminoacyl-sRNA transfer to protein in susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics: Significant percutaneous absorption of fusidic acid does not occur. Fusidic acid is excreted in the bile, almost entirely as metabolites. Little is excreted in the urine.
Indications/Uses
Topical: Treatment of primary and secondary skin infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Topical: Children and adults: Apply to affected area 3-4 times/day until favorable results are achieved. Suggested duration of treatment 7 days is usually adequate (maximum 10 days). If a gauze dressing is used, frequency of application may be reduced to 1-2 times/day.
Overdosage
Overdose is unlikely to occur since very small amounts of topically applied fusidic acid are absorbed into the systemic circulation.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fusidic acid or any component of the formulation.
Special Precautions
Avoid contact with eyes since butylhydroxyanisole may cause irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes.
Hypersensitivity reactions in the form of rashes and irritation may occur with topical fusidates. Should be used in short courses to reduce the risk of drug resistance or skin sensitization.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: There is no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant woman. Use only when potential benefit exceeds possible risk to the fetus.
Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; safety in breast-feeding woman has not been established. Use caution.
Adverse Reactions
Dermatologic: Pruritus, rash, irritation, allergic contact dermatitis.
Drug Interactions
Problem has not been documented.
