Indications/Uses
Postmenopausal osteoporosis, to reduce risk of fractures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before the 1st food or drink (other than water) of the day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ uncorrected hypocalcemia & abnormalities of the esophagus; unable to stand or sit upright for at least 60 min.
Special Precautions
Hypocalcemia & other bone & mineral metabolism disturbances should be effectively treated before treatment initation. Ensure adequate intake of Ca & vit D. May cause local irritation of the upper GI mucosa. Active upper GI problems (eg, known Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, other esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis or ulcers). Discontinue use if dysphagia, odynophagia, retrosternal pain or new or worsening heartburn. Development of osteonecrosis of the jaw w/ oral biphosphonates. Concomitant use w/ NSAIDs & oral biphosphonates. CrCl <30 mL/min. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GERD, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, flatulence, gastritis, oesophagitis (oesophageal ulcerations or strictures), duodenitis; headache, dizziness; arthralgia, myalgia, back pain; angioedema, face oedema, urticaria, rash; hypersensitivity; fatigue, flu-like illness (including myalgia, arthralgia, fever, chills, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite or bone pain); ocular inflammation eg, uveitis, espicleritis, scleritis.
Drug Interactions
Absorption may be interfered by Ca supplements, drugs containing multivalent cations (eg, Al, Mg, Fe). Increased bioavailability w/ ranitidine.
