Indications/Uses
Provision of amino acids in acute or chronic renal failure patients w/ hypoproteinemia, malnutrition, before & after surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Chronic renal failure Peripheral vein infusion: 200 mL daily. Infusion rate: 100 mL over 60 min (approx 25 drops/min). Hemodialysis: Infuse via vein side inj port of dialysis circuit starting 60-90 min before end of hemodialysis therapy. Central vein infusion: 400 mL daily infused via central vein by TPN. Acute renal failure 600 mL daily infused via central vein by TPN.
Contraindications
Patients w/ or risk of hepatic coma; hyperammonemia; inherited abnormal amino acid metabolism.
Special Precautions
Administer slowly via vein. Discontinue administration or use an alternate site if vascular pain occurs; if hyperkalemia develops. Administer to patients who need parenteral nutrition because oral or enteral nutrition is inadequate or not possible. CV dysfunction. Hepatic disorder or GI bleeding. Severe electrolyte imbalance or abnormal acid-base balance; acidosis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. May induce hyperkalemia in low birth wt infants. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Eruption, skin rash; nausea, vomiting; chest discomfort, palpitations; increased GOT, GPT, γ-GTP, ALP, LDH, LAP, total bilirubin & ammonia; increased BUN or creatinine; acidosis (large dose); chills, fever, warmth feeling, headache, vascular pain, lower extremity edema, hyperpotassemia, dry mouth.
