Description
Each tablet contains 50 mg sumatriptan (base) as the succinate salt.
Proper name: Sumatriptan succinate (USAN, BAN and INN).
Chemical name: 3-[2-(dimethyl amino)ethyl]-N-methyl-1H-Indole-5-methane sulphonamide, butane-1,4-dioate (1:1).
Molecular formula: C14H21N3O2S·C4H6O4.
Molecular mass: 413.5 g/mol.
Physicochemical properties: Sumatriptan succinate is a white to off-white powder with a melting point between 164.6 °C-165.5 °C.
Solubility: In water (4 °C) = 54 mg/mL.
In water (20 °C) = 101 mg/mL.
In saline (0.9% w/v, 4 °C) = 62 mg/mL.
In saline (0.9% w/v, 20 °C) = 109 mg/mL.
pH and pka: The pH of a 1% w/v solution of sumatriptan succinate in water is approximately 4.9.
pka1 (succinic acid) = 4.21, 5.67.
pka2 (3° amine group) = 9.63.
pka3 (sulphonamide group) = > 12.
Partition coefficient (between n-octanol and water): log P = 1.07 at a pH of 10.7.
