Alprazolam.
Indications/Uses
Short-term therapy for moderate or severe anxiety, and anxiety that associate with depression.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult: 0.25-0.5 mg 3 times daily. If necessary, the dosage may be increased at 3-4 days interval to a maximum of 4 mg per day in divided doses.
For elders, debilitated patients and patients with severe liver function impairment: 0.25 mg 2-3 times daily, the dose may be increase if necessary.
Overdosage
Patients are stimulated to vomit and empty the stomach.
Patients will be treated intensively with symptomatic and supportive therapy to maintain cardiovascular and respiratory function, also to maintain electrolyte balance.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepine; acute narrow-angle glaucoma; myasthenia gravis, acute pulmonary insufficiency, phobia, chronic psychotic obsession.
Special Precautions
May caused addiction.
Not recommended to use as a monotherapy in patients with depression or anxiety related to depression.
It is not recommended to drive or operate machine during therapy with this drug.
Conduct close monitoring for usage to pregnant and breastfeeding women, patients with chronic liver and renal disease, respiratory disease, muscle weakness and history of drug or alcohol abuse, patients with the real personality disorder.
The safety for usage in children under 10 years has not been assured yet.
Reduce the dose for elders and debilitated patients.
Avoid long-term therapy with this drug.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Conduct close monitoring for usage to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, ataxia/muscle weakness, amnesia, depression, light-headedness, confusion, hallucination, blurred vision.
Rare: headache, insomnia, paradoxical reaction, tremor, hypotension, gastrointestinal disorder, rash, libido changes, irregular menstrual cycle, urine retention, blood dyscrasia, and jaundice.
Drug Interactions
Drug effects may increase with CNS depressants, alcohol and barbiturate. Excretion is inhibited by cimetidine.
