Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of patients w/ moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 5 mg daily on the 1st wk, 10 mg/day on the 2nd wk, 15 mg/day on the 3rd wk & 20 mg/day from 4th wk on. Max: 20 mg/day. Elderly >65 yr 20 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Severe renal impairment, epilepsy. Concomitant use w/ NMDA antagonists eg, amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan. Careful monitoring of patients w/ factors or condition that may raise urinary pH. Recent MI, uncompensated CHF & uncontrolled HTN.
Adverse Reactions
Hallucination, confusion, dizziness, headache, tiredness.
Drug Interactions
L-dopa, dopaminergic agonists & anticholinergics; barbiturates & neuroleptics; antispasmodic agents, baclofen or dantrolene; cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine & nicotine. Avoid co-administration w/ amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan.
