Cetirizine diHCl
Indications/Uses
Perennial rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria & allergic conjunctivitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & childn ≥6 yr 10 mg/day or 5 mg bid. Childn 2-5 yr 5 mg/day as single dose or 2.5 mg bid every after 12 hr, 6 mth-2 yr Initially 2.5 mg/day. Max: 5 mg/day given bid. Hepatic & renal impairment Reduce dose to 1/2 the usual dose per day. Oral soln Adult & childn >12 yr 10 mL daily. Childn 6-12 yr 10 mL daily as single dose or 5 mL bid preferably morning & evening, 2-5 yr 2.5 mL bid. Oral drops Adult & childn >12 yr 20 drops once daily. Childn 6-12 yr 20 drops once daily or 10 drops bid (as divided doses in the morning & evening); 2-5 yr 10 drops once daily or 5 drops bid (as divided doses in the morning & evening); 6 mth-2 yr 5 drops once daily or 2.5 drops bid (as divided doses in the morning & evening).
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to antihistamines. History of unusual severe reactions eg, excessive sedation or CNS stimulation. Prostatic hypertrophy, narrow-angle glaucoma. Neonates & preterm/premature infants.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ renal impairment; epilepsy, severe CV disorders. Avoid alcoholic drink. May affect ability drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy. Infants (premature) & neonates. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness; irritability, insomnia, somnolence, fatigue, dry mouth, pharyngitis, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, epistaxis, bronchospasm, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, fixed drug eruptions. Oral drops: Hypotension, tinnitus, paresthesias, GI disturbances & blood disorders.
Drug Interactions
May enhance sedative effects of CNS depressants eg, alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives, neuroleptics. Enhanced antimuscarinic effects w/ MAOIs. Additive antimuscarinic action w/ atropine, TCAs. Higher incidence of adverse effects especially CNS stimulation & insomnia w/ oral decongestants.
