Terbutaline sulfate
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema & other lung diseases where bronchospasm is a complicating factor. Preterm labour.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Bronchospasm Adult 2.5 mg 3 times in a 24 hr period during the 1st 1-2 wk, then may be increased to 5 mg 3 times in 24 hr. Childn 0.075 mg/kg 3 times in 24 hr; suitable dosage: >30 kg 1-2 tab 3 times in 24 hr, 20-30 kg ½-1 tab 3 times in 24 hr, 20 kg ¼-½ tab 3 times in 24 hr. Preterm labour After the terbutaline sulfate IV infusion dose, continue w/ oral maintenance therapy 5 mg tid until the end of 36th wk of pregnancy.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Thyrotoxicosis, severe CV disorders eg, ischemic heart disease, tachyarrhythmias or severe heart failure. Additional blood glucose controls in diabetic patients. Acute severe asthma. Risk of serious hypokalemia. Monitor serum K levels. Pregnancy (1st trimester) & lactation. Transient hypoglycemia in newborn preterm infants after maternal treatment.
Adverse Reactions
Tremor, headache, tonic muscle cramps, tachycardia & palpitations. Urticaria & exanthema. Sleep & behavioral disturbances eg, agitation, hyperactivity & restlessness.
Drug Interactions
May partly or totally inhibit effect w/ β-receptor blocking agents (including eye drops), especially non-selective. May potentiate hypokalemia w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids & diuretics.
