Indications/Uses
Treatment of serious anaerobic infections due to Bacteroides fragilis, staphylococcal & streptococcal infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 150-300 mg 6 hrly. Severe infections 300-450 mg 6 hrly. Childn 3-6 mg/kg body wt 6 hrly, <12 mth or weighing ≤10 kg 37.5 mg 8 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Patients w/ GI disease especially w/ history of colitis; diarrhea.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if diarrhea & colitis develops. Renal & hepatic impairment. Monitor blood counts, renal & liver function on prolonged treatment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & loose stools. Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis. Skin rashes & urticaria, SJS, anaphylaxis, transient leucopenia, leucopenia w/ agranulocytosis, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, erythema multiforme, exfoliative & vesiculobullous dermatitis, polyarthritis, abnormal LFT, overt jaundice, hepatic damage.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of resp depression w/ tubocurarine, pancuronium & atracurium. Delayed excretion of toxin w/ diphenoxylate, loperamide & other opiate antidiarrheal drugs. Reduced absorption w/ kaolin-pectin susp. Inhibited in vitro activity of aminoglycosides. Antagonized activity of parasympathomimetics eg, neostigmine & pyridostigmine.
