Indications/Uses
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) especially due to uterine atony not responding to conventional methods. Used prophylactically by IM inj at birth of anterior shoulder in patients w/ the following conditions: Grand multipara, preeclampsia, rapid or prolonged labor, placental abnormalities, previous uterine surgery, history of PPH & retained placenta, overdistention of uterus, among others. Treatment of uterine atony.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Prophylaxis & treatment of PPH 125-250 mcg at the delivery of the anterior shoulder of fetus. Refractory PPH 250 mcg by deep IM at interval of about 90 min, but may be reduced to not <15 min if necessary. Total dose: ≤2,000 mcg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute pelvic inflammatory disease; active cardiac, pulmonary, renal or hepatic disease.
Special Precautions
History of asthma, hypotension or HTN; CV, renal or hepatic disease; anemia, jaundice, diabetes or epilepsy. Not recommended in patients having chorioamnionitis during labour. Patient w/ compromised or scarred uterus.
Adverse Reactions
Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperpyrexia, flushing.
