Special Precautions
Levofloxacin cause degenerative changes in weight-bearing joints of young animals, it has been suggested that these compounds should not be used in children, adolescents, pregnant women, or breast-feeding mothers. Tendon damage may occur rarely with fluoroquinolones, and treatment should be discontinued if patients experience tendon pain, inflammation, or rupture.
Care is necessary in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or myasthenia gravis. An adequate fluid intake should be maintained during treatment with ciprofloxacin and excessive alkalinity of the urine avoided because of the risk of crystalluria. Exposure to strong sunlight or sunlamps should also be avoided. The ability to drive or operate machinery may be impaired.
Levofloxacin can increase the occurrence of rare but serious events or ruptures or tears in the aorta. These tears or ruptures on an aortic aneurysm can lead to dangerous bleeding or death.
Healthcare professionals are advised to avoid prescribing Levofloxacin to patients who have aortic aneurysm or at risk for an aortic aneurysm, such as patients with peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease, hypertension, certain genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and elderly patients. The benefit of using Levofloxacin to these patients should be assessed by the prescribers prior to initiation of therapy. It should be prescribed to these patients only when no other treatment options are available.
Seek immediate medical treatment for any symptoms associated with aortic aneurysm and stop the Levofloxacin therapy immediately if suggestive of aortic aneurysm or dissection.
