Orlistat
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before, during or w/in 1 hr after each main meal. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose may be omitted.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to orlistat. Chronic malabsorption syndrome. Cholestasis. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if patient does not lose at least 5% of their body-wt during the 1st 12 wk of therapy. Long-term therapy should not continue beyond 2 yr. Wt loss may affect the dosing of medicines for other conditions (eg, high cholesterol or diabetes). Over-consumption of fat & cal may reduce wt loss effect. May increase GI effects if taken w/ a very high fat meal; daily intake of fat should be distributed evenly over 3 main meals. Renal stones in patients suffering from CKD. Use of additional contraceptive method to prevent possible failure of OCs in case of severe diarrhea. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation. Not intended for childn.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, abdominal pain/discomfort, urgent or increased number of bowel movements, flatulence w/ or w/o discharge, oily discharge or fatty stools, liqd stools, low blood sugar levels, upper resp infections, flu. Rectal pain/discomfort, soft stools, incontinence, bloating, tooth/gum disorder, menstrual cycle irregularity, tiredness, anxiety, lower resp infections, UTI.
Drug Interactions
May modify the activity of anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), ciclosporin, iodine salts &/or levothyroxine, amiodarone, medicines for HIV. Reduced absorption of supplements of fat-soluble nutrients, particularly β-carotene & vit E. Decreased absorption of antiepileptic medicines. Acarbose.
