Metformin HCl
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 500 mg bid-tid or 850 mg once or bid, gradually increased to a max of 2-3 g daily if necessary.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
IDDM; heart failure, MI, dehydration, acute or chronic alcoholism or any other conditions predisposing to lactic acidosis; renal impairment, liver failure.
Special Precautions
Monitor renal & hepatic function regularly. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects eg, anorexia, nausea, vomiting; impaired absorption of vit B12, metallic taste, wt loss.
Drug Interactions
May increase the risk of hypoglycemia w/ drugs that decrease blood glucose conc. May reduce efficacy w/ drugs that increase blood glucose conc. May increase the risk of lactic acidosis & hypoglycemia. Care when given concomitantly w/ drugs that may impair renal function.
