Escitalopram oxalate
Indications/Uses
Depression, panic disorder w/ or w/o agoraphobia, generalized & social anxiety disorders, & obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Depression, generalized & social anxiety disorders 10 mg once daily, increased after at least 1 wk up to a max of 20 mg once daily. Panic disorder w/ or w/o agoraphobia Initially 5 mg once daily, may be increased after 1 wk to 10 mg once daily up to a max of 20 mg daily. Patient w/ hepatic impairment or those who are poor metabolizers w/ CYP2C19 isoenzyme Initially 5 mg daily, may be increased to 10 mg daily after 2 wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram. MAOIs.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ active or history of epilepsy; cardiac disease or history of bleeding disorders; diabetes; angle-closure glaucoma; those receiving ECT. Discontinue if seizure develops.
Adverse Reactions
Dry mouth, GI disturbances (eg, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, constipation & diarrhea); anorexia, wt loss; anxiety, restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, or drowsiness & fatigue; headache, tremor, dizziness, seizures, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, extrapyramidal effects, depersonalization, mania, panic attacks, sexual dysfunction; excessive sweating, pruritus, skin rashes, alopecia, photosensitivity & urticaria; angioedema & anaphylactoid reactions.
Drug Interactions
Drugs known to affect platelet function. Severe adverse effects may occur w/ other antidepressants.
