Indications/Uses
Management of psychotic disorders & nonpsychotic symptoms associated w/ dementia in the elderly.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Day 1: Initially 1 mg bid; day 2: 2 mg bid; day 3: 3 mg bid. Optimal dose: 2-4 mg bid. Elderly & patient w/ impaired liver & kidney function Initially 0.5 mg bid, increased to 1-2 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if neuroleptic malignant syndrome occurs. Patients w/ impaired liver & kidney, known history of CV disease (eg, heart failure, MI, conduction abnormalities, dehydration, hypovolemia or cerebrovascular disease), hyperprolactinemia, Parkinson's disease, unstable epilepsy, wt gain. Dose reduction should be considered if hypotension occurs. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <15 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Akathisia, anxiety, nervousness, impaired vision, sexual disorders, decreased extrapyramidal effects, polyuria, change in mental status.
Drug Interactions
Amplified effects of depression w/ alcohol. May increase the effect of orthostatic hypotension in patients taking antihypertensives. Eliminated effects of bromocriptine or pergolide therapy. Antagonize the effect of levodopa & dopamine agonists. Decreased clearance w/ clozapine. Increased clearance w/ carbamazepine.
