Fe sucrose
Indications/Uses
Fe deficiency in patients who cannot tolerate oral Fe therapy or who are not compliant, in active inflammatory bowel disease, in CKD; when there is a need for a rapid Fe supply.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5-10 mL (100-200 mg Fe) 1-3 wkly by slow IV inj at 1 mL/min (undiluted). Max: 10 mL (200 mg Fe) per inj.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity or known serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral Fe products. Patients w/ evidence of Fe overload or hereditary disturbances in utilization of Fe; patients w/ anemia not caused by Fe deficiency.
Special Precautions
Serious hypersensitivity reactions. Hypotension following Fe sucrose inj in hemodialysis dependent CKD. W/hold Fe administration in presence of evident tissue Fe overload. Periodic monitoring of hematologic & hematinic parameters (Hb, hematocrit, serum ferritin & transferrin saturation). Check for absence of sediments before using. Discard if any visible particles appear. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended for use in childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dysgeusia; hypotension, HTN, nausea; inj site pain.
