Risperidone
Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia & other psychoses & short-term treatment of mania associated w/ bipolar disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Initially 2 mg daily, may be increased to 4 mg daily on the 2nd day, subsequently adjusted in increments/decrements of 1 or 2 mg daily, generally at intervals of not <1 wk. Max: 16 mg daily. Acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder 2-3 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments of 1 mg daily at intervals of not < 24 hr up to total of 6 mg daily. Elderly & debilitated patient Initial dosage regimen should be reduced as for schizophrenia.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ CV disease, including conditions associated w/ QT prolongation or conditions predisposing to hypotension. History of or at risk of developing cerebrovascular disease, w/ Parkinsons disease or epilepsy, & w/ hepatic or renal impairment. Not to be used during pregnancy. Lactation
Adverse Reactions
Agitation, insomnia, anxiety, headache, CVA, tachycardia, wt. gain, oedema, increased liver enzyme values, & decreased neutrophil or thrombocytes counts. Dose-dependent increases in prolactin levels.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced central effects of other CNS depressants, including alcohol. Enhanced effects of antihypertensives. Increased risk of QT prolongation w/ other drugs known to cause QT prolongation. Antagonized actions of levodopa & other dopaminergics. Decreased atypical antipsychotic fraction w/ carbamazepine & other enzyme inducers. Increased plasma conc of atypical antipsychotic fraction w/ fluoxetine.
