Alendronic acid (as alendronate Na trihydrate)
Indications/Uses
Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis & osteoporosis in men.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take w/ a full glass of plain water only, at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/medication of the day & remain in sitting/upright position for at least 30 min. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Abnormalities of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying eg, stricture or achalasia. Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 min. Hypocalcemia.
Special Precautions
Correct hypocalcemia & other disorders affecting mineral metabolism eg, vit D deficiency prior to therapy. Monitor serum Ca & hypocalcemia. Ensure adequate Ca absorption & vit D intake. Discontinue use if esophageal reaction including dysphagia, odynophagia, retrosternal pain or new/worsening heartburn occurs. Active upper GI problems; severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <35 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, transient myalgia & malaise symptoms; esophagitis, esophageal erosions & ulcers; rash, photosensitivity, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Estrogen/hormone replacement therapy, NSAID- & aspirin-containing products, Ca supplements & antacids.
