Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Monotherapy & combination w/ other oral antidiabetics Initially 500 or 850 mg bid-tid, may be gradually increased by an increment of 1 tab after 10-15 days. Patient receiving high metformin dose (2-3 g/day) It is possible to replace two 500-mg tab w/ one 1-g tab. Max: 3 g daily in 3 divided doses. Combination w/ insulin Initially 1 tab of 500 or 850 mg bid-tid. Childn & adolescent Monotherapy & combination w/ insulin Initially 1 tab of 500 or 850 mg once daily. May be gradually increased by an increment of 1 tab after 10-15 days. Max: 2 g daily in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Diabetic coma, ketoacidosis, hepatic or renal impairment, predisposition to lactic acidosis, severe infection or trauma, dehydration, alcohol dependence; vit B12, folic acid & Fe deficiencies. Recent MI, dehydration or any condition likely to predispose to lactic acidosis. Avoid during pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Long-term administration may cause disturbance in vit B12 absorption leading to vit B12 deficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, diarrhea; metallic taste & wt loss.
Drug Interactions
May increase risk of lactic acidosis & hypoglycemia w/ alcohol. Concomitant use w/ drugs that may impair renal function. May impair absorption of vit B12.
