Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, Lyme's disease, meningitis, septicemia, syphilis, typhoid fever & Whipple's disease. Prophylaxis for surgical infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Severe infections Up to 4 g daily. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 250 mg single IM dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis Single dose of 1 g administered 0.5-2 hr before surgery. Colorectal surgery 2 g before surgery. Secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 250 mg single IM dose. Childn & infant <50 kg 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Severe infections Up to 80 mg/kg daily. Neonates Max: <50 mg/kg IV over 60 mins daily. Secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis 125 mg as single dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, reactions resembling serum sickness & anaphylaxis. False +ve response to Coombs' test. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organism & pseudomembranous colitis.
Drug Interactions
Potential to increase effects of anticoagulants & cause a disulfiram-like reaction w/ alcohol.
