Indications/Uses
Treatment of duodenal & gastric ulcers, GERD, heart burn, erosive esophagitis & hypersecretory conditions (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas & systemic mastocytosis). Prevention of stress & NSAID-induced ulcers, acid aspiration syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Reflux esophagitis 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 wk. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. Management therapy can be continued w/ 20 mg once daily. Peptic ulcer 20 mg as single daily dose or 40 mg for severe cases, for 4 wk (in patients w/ duodenal ulcer) or 8 wk (in those w/ gastric ulcer). Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initially 60 mg once daily, but doses in the range 20-120 mg may be used. Doses >80 mg should be divided & given bid.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before a meal.
Special Precautions
Monitor for serious allergic reactions (including angioedema, anaphylaxis) & dermatologic reactions (including SJS & TEN); atrophic gastritis (long-term use). Exclude the possibility of malignancy prior to treatment in patients w/ gastric ulcers.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
May increase plasma conc of diazepam, phenytoin & warfarin; interfere w/ the absorption of ketoconazole, ampicillin esters & Fe salts.
