Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Relief of pain including muscular, rheumatic, dental, post-op & postpartum pain & headache.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hr. Max: Not to be given >7 day. ≥6 mth 6.5 mg/kg every 6-8 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid, ASA or any NSAIDs. Previous or active peptic ulceration. Patients w/ cardiac, liver & renal disease.
Special Precautions
Not to be given in patients w/ GI tract ulceration or inflammation; history of stroke (CVA), heart attack (MI), CABG, uncontrolled HTN & CHF. Frequently monitor prothrombin time in concurrent administration w/ oral anticoagulant drugs. Ensure adequate hydration & monitor renal function in the beginning of concomitant treatment w/ antihypertensive drugs & periodically thereafter. Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
May enhance response to oral anticoagulants eg, warfarin. Reduced efficacy of diuretics & other hypertensive drugs. Increased renal function deterioration including possible acute renal failure w/ ACE inhibitor. Increased risk of GI ulceration or bleeding w/ corticosteroids. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Change in effects of insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents. Elevated plasma levels & reduced renal clearance of lithium. May increase plasma levels of MTX. Possible increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ tacrolimus.
