Aciclovir
Indications/Uses
Treatment of initial & recurrent mucocutaneous HSV-1 & HSV-2 infections & severe 1st episodes of genital herpes infections in immunocompetent individuals. HSV encephalitis & neonatal HSV infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Max of 20 mg/kg every 8 hr by slow IV infusion, at constant rate over at least 1 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Neurologic abnormalities & patients w/ serious renal or electrolyte abnormalities or substantial hypoxia. Risk of aciclovir-induced renal impairment &/or reversible CNS symptoms. Avoid IM & SC inj as well as rapid or bolus IV inj. Elderly & patients w/ existing renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation or phlebitis at inj site. Renal failure, fever & pain.
Drug Interactions
Caution w/ intrathecal methotrexate or interferon. Increased risk of renal impairment w/ nephrotoxic drugs. Renal clearance blockade w/ probenecid.
