Oxymetazoline HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of nasal & nasal pharyngeal congestion due to common cold, sinusitis, hay fever or other upper resp allergies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥6 yr 2 or 3 sprays bd into each nostril, morning & evening.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or other adrenergic agents. Patients taking MAOIs or those who have taken MAOIs in the previous 2 wk; w/ narrow-angle glaucoma; acute CV disease or cardiac asthma; severe high BP & after trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy. Inflammation of skin & mucosa of nasal vestibule & encrustation (rhinitis sicca).
Special Precautions
Do not exceed the recommended dosage. May cause rebound congestion if used for >3 days. Do not use in patients who have heart disease, high BP, thyroid disease, diabetes or difficulty in urination due to enlarged prostate gland. May spread infection if used by >1 person. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Mild & transient burning, stinging, sneezing or increased nasal discharge.
Drug Interactions
Pressor effects may be potentiated w/ TCAs, maprotiline, other vasoconstrictive drugs or MAOIs.
