Indications/Uses
Parencyhmal neurocysticercosis caused by Taenia solium & cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung & peritoneum caused by Echinococcus granulosus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult & childn Roundworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus) 400 mg single dose. Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) 400 mg single dose & repeat in 2 wk. Adult Tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) 800 mg/day in 2 divided doses for 1-6 mth. Giardiasis (Giardia duodenalis) 400 mg once daily for 5 days. Susp Adult & childn >2 yr Roundworm, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm, threadworm 10 mL single dose. Tapeworm 10 mL single dose or 10 mL 1 dose/day for 3 days. Opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis 10 mL 2 doses/day for 3 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take tab w/ high fat meal. For patients w/ difficulty swallowing, tab may be crushed/chewed, then swallowed w/ a drink or water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to albendazole or benzimidazole class of compd.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation. FC tab: Monitor patients w/ bone marrow suppression, aplastic anemia & agranulocytosis. Cerebral hypertensive episodes may occur during the 1st wk of neurocysticercosis therapy. Patients w/ preexisting & previously undiagnosed neurocysticercosis. Pre-existing hepatic disease & elevations of hepatic enzymes. Increased risk of hepatotoxicity, & bone marrow suppression which may lead to pancytopenia, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis & leukopenia; retinal damage & lesions in patients w/ cysterciscosis. Susp: Cerebral hypertensive episodes, hepatic disease, renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
FC tab: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting; headache. Erythema multiforme, SJS; aplastic anemia; hepatotoxicity; elevated liver enzymes. Susp: GI disturbance, headache, dizziness.
Drug Interactions
FC tab: Increased level/effects by grapefruit juice. Decreased level/effects by aminoquinolines. Susp: Increased serum levels w/ dexamethasone, praziquantel. Metabolism may be increased by cimetidine.
