Per 0.5 mL Tetanus toxoid ≥40 IU, adsorbed on Al phosphate ≥1.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Active immunization against tetanus in adults, childn & infants ≥6 wk. Tetanus prophylaxis for wound management in persons ≥7 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Immunization schedule Unimmunised individuals ≥7 yr Primary immunizing course: 2 doses or 0.5 mL each 4-8 wk apart followed by a 3rd dose, 6-12 mth after the 2nd dose. Neonatal tetanus prevention Previously unimmunized pregnant woman 2 doses before delivery (4-8 wk apart), preferably during the last 2 trimesters. Tetanus prophylaxis in wound management Individuals who have completed primary immunization against tetanus & who sustain wounds Give booster dose if they have not received tetanus toxoid w/in the preceding 10 yr. Patients w/ tetanus prone wounds A booster is appropriate if did not receive a tetanus toxoid-containing prep w/in the preceding 5 yr. If a booster dose is given sooner than 10 yr as part of wound management, the next routine booster should not be given for 10 yr thereafter.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetanus toxoid, thiomersal. Anaphylactic reaction after receiving vaccine w/ TT antigen. Febrile illness or acute infection. Poliomyelitis outbreak.
Special Precautions
Do not inj into blood vessel. Patients w/ Arthus-type hypersensitivity reactions or temp >39°C after a previous dose; impaired immune responsiveness. Thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder.
Adverse Reactions
Pain, erythema, induration & tenderness. Nodule, sterile abscess formation, or SC atrophy; fever, chills, myalgias & headaches; Arthus-type hypersensitivity reactions, high fever. Neurological complications eg, convulsions, encephalopathy & Guillain-Barré syndrome.
