Indications/Uses
Improvement in postprandial plasma glucose transition in patients w/ type 2 DM w/ inadequate response to dietary treatment & exercise therapy alone, or use of α-glucosidase inhibitors in addition to diet & physical exercise.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/in 5 min before meals.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity. Severe ketosis, diabetic coma or precoma, type 1 DM, severe infections, before or after surgery, or serious trauma. Women who are pregnant or may possibly be pregnant.
Special Precautions
Not indicated to diseases w/ diabetes-like symptoms eg, renal diabetes, senile glycometabolic disorder & abnormal thyroid function. Administer only in patients w/ fasting blood glucose level ≥126 mg/dL or postprandial blood glucose level ≥200 mg/dL w/in 1 or 2-hr period. Ischemic heart disease, pituitary or adrenal insufficiency, gastroenteropathy (eg, diarrhea & vomiting), malnutrition, starvation, insufficient food intake, debility. Strenuous physical exercise, excessive alcohol ingestion. Periodically monitor blood glucose level & condition. Should not be concomitantly used w/ sulfonylurea-type agents. Concomitant use w/ insulin sensitizer (eg, pioglitazone HCl) or biguanides (eg, metformin). Hepatic & renal dysfunction. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Contraindicated in pregnancy. Avoid in lactating women. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemic symptoms (eg, dizziness, hunger pangs, tremor, feeling of weakness, cold sweat, decreased consciousness, malaise, palpitations, dull headache, bleary-eyes feeling, nausea, feeling bad, numbness, sleepiness, difficulty in walking, yawning); increased pyruvic acid, AST (GOT), γ-GTP, lactic acid, ALT (GPT) & free fatty acid; abdominal distension, constipation, diarrhea, headache.
Drug Interactions
May enhance hypoglycemic effect w/ insulin prep, biguanides (eg, metformin), α-glucosidase inhibitors (eg, voglibose), insulin sensitizer (eg, pioglitazone HCl), salicylates (eg, aspirin), clofibrate, sulfanilamide (eg, sulfamethoxazole), β-adrenergic blocking agents (eg, propranolol), MAOIs, anabolic hormone (eg, mestanolone), tetracyclines (eg, tetracycline HCl, minocycline HCl). May reduce hypoglycemic effect w/ epinephrine, adrenocortical hormones (eg, methylprednisolone), ovarian hormones (eg, ethinylestradiol) & thyroid hormones, nicotinic acid, INH, pyrazinamide, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), diuretics (eg, thiazide, chlorthalidone, ethacrynic acid), phenytoin, guanethidine sulphate.
