Ca polystyrene sulfonate
Indications/Uses
Hyperkalaemia associated w/ anuria & severe oliguria, & due to acute & chronic renal failure.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Oral 15 g tid-qid. Rectal 30 g once daily. If possible, retain for at least 9 hr following irrigation. Childn Oral Initially 1 g/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Maintenance dose: 0.5 g/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Rectal Use the same dose given orally, diluted in the same ratio for adult. Neonate Rectal 0.5-1 g/kg.
Contraindications
Obstructive bowel disease; conditions associated w/ hypercalcemia eg, hyperparathyroidism, multiple myeloma, sarcoidosis or metastatic carcinoma.
Special Precautions
Not to be administered orally in neonates. Discontinue treatment if constipation occurs; serum K conc have been reduced to 5 mEq/L. Avoid aspiration which may lead to bronchopulmonary complication. Avoid use in patients w/ hyperparathyroidism, multiple myeloma, sarcoidosis, or metastatic carcinoma, who may present w/ renal failure & hypercalcaemia. May be insufficient to rapidly correct severe hyperkalemia. Monitor serum Ca level at wkly intervals; Mg levels. Concomitant use w/ Al hydroxide & digoxin. Not to be used w/ Mg containing laxatives. Not to be mixed with fruit juices containing K. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Gastric irritation, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, fecal impaction, intestinal obstruction, hypokalemia, hypercalcemia.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption of oral tetracycline.
