Mefenamic acid

Indications/Uses

Mild to moderate pain including headache, dental pain, post-op pain & dysmenorrhea, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal & joint disorders eg, OA & RA (Still's disease).

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn >12 yr Initially 1 tab followed by ½ tab every 8 hr as needed but not >7 days.

Overdosage

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Active peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease; cross-sensitivity w/ aspirin & other NSAIDs; elicit allergic symptoms eg, bronchoconstriction. History of stroke, CVA, MI, CABG, uncontrolled HTN, CHF NYHA II-IV. Hepatic & renal impairment.

Special Precautions

Patients receiving insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents. Signs of lithium toxicity. Concomitant therapy w/ plasma protein binding drugs, anticoagulants & corticosteroids. Impaired renal & liver function. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.

Adverse Reactions

Dyspepsia, upper GIT discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain; headache, drowsiness, nervousness, visual disturbances; skin rashes, urticaria. Allergic glomerulonephritis & reversible non-oliguric renal failure. Hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia or thrombocytopenic purpura & bone marrow aplasia. False +ve result in tests for the presence of bile in urine.

Drug Interactions

Interferes w/ anti-platelet effect of low-dose aspirin. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Increased plasma levels of MTX. Possible increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ tacrolimus. Reduce dose of anticoagulants if used concomitantly. Increased risk of GI bleeding w/ corticosteroids. May reduce efficacy of diuretics & antihypertensive drugs eg, ACE inhibitors, AIIA, & β-blockers.
