Triamcinolone acetonide
Indications/Uses
Treatment of inflammatory process of joints & tendon sheath, pain, swelling, stiffness associated w/ RA, OA, dermatologic disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Hay fever 40-100 mg. IA 2.5-40 mg. Inflammatory skin disorders 1-3 mg/site w/ not more than 5 mg inj into 1 site or not more than 30 mg total in several sites.
Contraindications
Acute infections uncontrolled by appropriate antimicrobial chemotherapy. Active or doubtfully quiescent pulmonary TB.
Special Precautions
Heart failure, recent MI or HTN, DM, epilepsy, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, hepatic failure, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer, psychoses or severe affective disorders & renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Mobilization of Ca & P, w/ osteoporosis & spontaneous fractures; muscle wasting & nitrogen depletion; hyperglycemia w/ or precipitation of the diabetic state. Delayed wound healing, increased susceptibility to infections. Menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, hyperhidrosis, skin thinning, ocular changes eg, glaucoma & cataract, mental & neurological disturbances, benign intracranial HTN, acute pancreatitis & avascular necrosis of bone.
Drug Interactions
Barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone or rifampicin enhance systemic absorption. OC or ritonavir increase plasma conc. Thiazides or furosemide causes excessive K+ loss. Amphotericin B, xanthines or β2-agonists. NSAIDs. Dexamethasone.
