Indications/Uses
Treatment of essential or primary HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 2 mg daily, may be increased to 4 mg daily after 3-4 wk & if necessary to 6 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Avoid grapefruit juice.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ hypotension, poor cardiac reserve, heart failure. Not to be used in cardiogenic shock, MI, acute unstable angina, chronic stable angina. May increase risk of developing heart failure in severe aortic stenosis. Sudden w/drawal may exacerbate angina. Hepatic impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, flushing, headache, hypotension, peripheral edema, tachycardia & palpitations. Nausea, other GI disturbances, increased micturition frequency, lethargy, eye pain & mental depression. Ischaemic chest pain; potential cerebral or myocardial ischemia or transient blindness.
Drug Interactions
May enhance effects of β-blockers. Enhanced antihypertensive effects w/ aldesleukin & antipsychotics. May modify insulin & glucose responses. Interactions may occur w/ quinidine; carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin; cimetidine & erythromycin.
