Indications/Uses
Treatment of schizophrenia & moderate to severe mania associated w/ bipolar disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Schizophrenia & prevention of recurrence in bipolar disorder Starting dose: 10 mg/day. Subsequently adjusted w/in the range of 5-20 mg/day. Manic episode Starting dose: 15 mg as a single daily dose in monotherapy or 10 mg daily in combination therapy. Subsequently adjusted w/in the range of 5-20 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Place in the mouth & allow to dissolve completely then, swallow w/ saliva. Alternatively, disperse in a full glass of water or other beverages (orange juice/apple juice/milk/coffee) immediately prior administration.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Known risk of narrow-angle glaucoma.
Special Precautions
Elderly patients w/ dementia-related psychosis. Increase incidence of cerebrovascular adverse events (eg, stroke, transient ischemic attack). Suicide ideation. Discontinuation & close monitoring of use in patients w/ NMS. Hyperglycemia. Hyperlipidemia. Wt gain. Tardive dyskinesia. Orthostatic hypotension associated w/ dizziness, tachycardia, bradycardia, syncope. Seizures. Potential for cognitive & motor impairment. Hyperprolactinemia. Monitor fasting blood glucose & lipid profiles. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, wt gain, eosinophilia, elevated prolactin, cholesterol, glucose & triglyceride levels, glucosuria, increased appetite, dizziness, akathisia, parkinsonism, dyskinesia, orthostatic hypotension, anticholinergic effects, transient asymptomatic elevations of hepatic aminotransferases, rash, asthenia, fatigue & oedema.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate orthostatic hypotension w/ diazepam & alcohol (eg, ethanol). May antagonize the effects of direct & indirect dopamine agonists; anti-parkinsonian drugs.
