Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including resp tract, enteric fever, UTI, otitis media. Gonorrhea. Sequential treatment after initial IV chemotherapy after parenteral cephalosporin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 400 mg as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Childn 8 mg/kg/day as single or in 2 divided doses. Renal impairment CrCl >60 mL/min Usual dose; 21-60 mL/min or on hemodialysis 75% standard dose at standard dosing interval; 20 mL/min or on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis ½ standard dose at standard dosing interval. Course of treatment: 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Discontinue use if allergic effect occur. May permit overgrowth of clostridia. Severe antibiotic-associated diarrhea including pseudomembranous colitis. Markedly impaired renal function. History of GI disease particularly colitis. False +ve reaction in urine w/ nitroprusside testing, Benedict's or Fehling's soln or w/ copper sulfate test cap, Coombs' test. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, stool changes; pseudomembranous colitis; headache, dizziness; rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia; thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia; genital pruritus & vaginitis.
