Haloperidol
Indications/Uses
Management of manifestations of acute & chronic psychosis including schizophrenia & manic states; severe behavior problems in childn who have combative, explosive hyperexcitability & in the symptomatic control of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Psychoses & associated behavior disorders Initially 0.5-5 mcg bid-tid. Severe psychoses or resistant patient Doses of up to 100 mcg daily may be required. Reduce dose gradually according to response. Maintenance: 3-10 mcg daily. Childn Initially 25-50 mcg/kg daily in 2 divided doses, increase cautiously if necessary.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI irritation.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe depressive or comatose states; Parkinson's disease or preexisting Parkinson-like symptoms.
Special Precautions
Risk of tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Contributory to precipitation of anginal attacks (very rare instances). Moderate hypotension w/ excessive dose. Vertigo & syncope rarely occur. May lower convulsive threshold & trigger seizures in previously controlled known epileptics. Patients w/ severe liver or kidney impairment; or those w/ allergy to other neuroleptic drugs. Avoid abrupt w/drawal on patients on maintenance treatment. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Neuromuscular (extrapyramidal) effects eg, Parkinson-like symptoms, akathisia, dyskinesia, dystonia, hyperreflexia, rigidity; insomnia, depressive reactions & toxic confusional states; blurred vision, urinary retention, dry mouth, incontinence, priapism; HTN, tachycardia & ECG changes; leukopenia & leukocytosis (mild & transient), decreased blood cell count, anemia; mastalgia, lactation, menstrual irregularities, breast enlargement; nausea, vomiting, heartburn, wt loss, constipation, diarrhea & hypersalivation; bronchospasm, increased depth of resp & statis pneumonia.
