Fexofenadine HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of allergic rhinitis & chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults & childn ≥6 yr (for 60 mg) & ≥12 yr (for 180 mg).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 60 mg bid or 180 mg once daily. Patient w/ decreased renal function 60 mg once daily. Childn 6-11 yr 30 mg bid. Patient w/ decreased renal function 30 mg once daily.
Administration
180-mg tab: Should be taken on an empty stomach. Do not take w/ fruit juice. 60-mg tab: May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use in patient w/ arrhythmia. Concomitant use w/ macrolides (eg, erythromycin) or imidazole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole). Avoid driving motor vehicle or operating machinery. Renal impairment. Not to be used in 1st trimester of pregnancy & during lactation. Not to be used in childn <6 mth. Avafast 60: Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, drowsiness, dizziness; nausea. Hypersensitivity reactions eg, angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnea, flushing & systemic anaphylaxis; insomnia, nervousness, sleep disorders or nightmare/excessive dreaming (paroniria); tachycardia, palpitations; diarrhea; rash, urticaria, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Decreased AUC & Cmax w/ Al- & Mg-containing antacids. Increased plasma levels w/ erythromycin or ketoconazole.
