Action
PHARMACOLOGY: BELCID SUSPENSION neutralize gastric acidity, resulting in an increase in the pH of the stomach and duodenal bulb. Additionally, by increasing the gastric pH above 4, they inhibit the proteolytic activity of pepsin.
Aluminum hydroxide is solubilized in the stomach and reacts with hydrochloric acid to form aluminum chloride and water. About 17-30% of the aluminum chloride formed is absorbed and is rapidly excreted by the kidneys in patients with normal renal function. Aluminum hydroxide also combines with dietary phosphate in the intestine forming insoluble, nonabsorbable aluminum phosphate which is excreted in the feces.
Magnesium hydroxide rapidly reacts with hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and water. About 15-30% of the magnesium chloride formed is absorbed and is rapidly excreted By the kidneys in patients with normal renal function.
Simethicone antifoams spread on the surface of aqueous liquids, forming a film of low surface tension and thus causing collapse of foam bubbles. It allows mucus-surrounded gas bubbles in the GI tract to coalesce and be expelled.
